Why Do Extractor Fan Filters Need Cleaning, And How To Clean Them

Extractor fan filters get grimy fast. If you don’t clean them, they stop doing their job—and that means smells, grease, and even fire risks. Here’s why it matters, and how to sort it.

Amanda Lorenzini built-in cooking expert explains why extractor fans need cleaning.

    Amanda says....

“Your cooker hood catches smoke, steam and grease while you prepare food. Over time, grease and grime build up inside the filters obstructing proper ventilation and reducing its efficiency. If left uncleaned, it may become a fire hazard.

"It's recommended to clean your extractor fan filters every two to three months, depending on how often you cook. If you frequently fry or cook with oil, you may need to clean them more often to prevent excessive grease build-up."

"Cleaning your extractor fan filters is easier than you might think. Simply remove the filters and place them in your dishwasher on a high-temperature cycle. This is an effective and convenient way to break down stubborn grease and grime without much effort. Or you can soak the filters in hot, soapy water for at least 10 minutes, then use a brush to scrub away any remaining residue. The heat and soap help to loosen grease, while scrubbing ensures a thorough clean."

"Whilst the filters are in the dishwasher or soaking in the sink, wipe down the surrounding areas with a microfibre cloth.”
