Spruce up the kids school uniform

Now it’s back to school season, we’ve put together some top tips to help you find the bottom of the laundry basket. From lunchtime spills to art class mishaps, your kids’ school uniforms go through a lot. Gwil Snook, AO.com’s laundry expert, has shared some tips to make it that bit easier:

For the first cycle of the school year, try washing on a cooler temperature to stop any colour bleeding - this also saves any possible shrinkage. For more delicate materials like cardigans and jumpers, fasten zips and buttons and pop them on a low-speed spin cycle to prevent snags.

When it comes to treating stains, time is of the essence. As soon as your little one gets home, treat their top to a soak in a dedicated stain remover or a mixture of water and bicarbonate of soda before washing.

Fancy saving yourself a hefty load of ironing? Follow these steps to minimise creases:

    1

If you’re on the hunt for a new washing machine, look out for anti-crease programmes that’ll do the hard work for you.

    2

As soon as the wash cycle ends, give school uniforms a good shake and hang them up straight away.

    3

Spritz clothes with a wrinkle-releasing product - or even make your own by mixing one part water with 1 part fabric softener.

    4

Give clothes some breathing room in the wardrobe. Packing clothes into an overflowing wardrobe can create more creases.

    5

If you’re tumble drying your clothes, pop a damp cloth in for the last 10 minutes of the cycle. This softens the fabrics and loosens creases. Another trick is adding a tennis ball as this creates pockets of air in the drum, so everything dries quicker which means less crinkles.

Handheld steamers are a quick, easy way to get rid of creases. They’re cheap to buy and easy to store. But if you don’t fancy getting another product, hang clothes up in the bathroom and let the steam from the shower do it for you.
