So, it’s spring, the sun is shining, the flowers are out… Or they would be except, where we live, nobody told winter about it! So we decided to make our own flowers to brighten the place up a bit. We have a new member on the craft team in our house, too. Minnie has been dying to get her hands on the felt tips!

here's what you'll need...

  • Tissue paper
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Thin card
  • Double sided sticky tape
  • Pva glue or glue stick
  • Pom poms
  • Decorative materials: Felt tips, glitter etc

here's how it's done...

  • 1

Cut a circle of card for the centre of the flower, and use a folded piece of card to make a leaf shape. Then decorate the leaf and centre of the flower with the craft materials and the Pom Poms. As Minnie is only tiny she did this part first and I cut the shapes out afterwards. With older children, it’s better to cut the shapes first so they can design their own pattern.

  • 2

Next cut the tissue into rectangles around 20cm x 25cm. Layer 3 or 5 sheets and fold them in a concertina style. Wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around the centre and twist to secure. Trim the ends of the tissue, try pointy or scalloped, and then fan out the tissue and separate the layers carefully.

  • 3

Attach the circle to the centre of the flower and the leaf to the stem with glue or double sided sticky tape. The glue will take longer to dry but will also last longer.

  • 4

We made ours huge and bright with big wobbly pipe cleaners, the kids loved them. However, you can also reduce the size of the tissue and pipe cleaners and add patterned tissue to the outside layer for a more sophisticated look.

    How will you decorate yours?
