How to Look After Your Appliances in Cold Weather

Did you know that we're not the only ones who feel the cold when the cooler months roll in? That's right, our appliances are sensitive too! But fear not, we have come up with some advice on how to get your white goods through the winter.

    Washing Machines

If your washing machine sits against an outside-facing wall that isn't well-insulated, the transfer of cold water can actually damage its insides and cause frozen pipes - which nobody wants. To avoid this, you can wrap your washer's hoses with pipe insulation, giving them their very own duvet-like protection from extreme temperatures.

    Tumble Dryer

Temps below 5 degrees are a bit of a no-no for tumble dryers. Condenser dryers in particular have more problems as the water travelling through their pipes can freeze if the machine gets too cold. Where possible, dryers should be kept in a room that's well-insulated rather than places like garages.

    Fridge Freezers

You're probably thinking that fridge freezers should be fine in chilly temps, right? Well, sort of. If external temps are too low, it can actually stop the compressor from working. Luckily, most models tend to be kept in kitchens and safe from the elements, but it's always worth checking for any cold spots anyway.

It's also always worth keeping things clean. As everyone knows, dust can build over time which can cause energy consumption to rise. So unplugging and having a good old vacuum round can help.

    Dishwashers

When these dish-cleaning machines are exposed to the freezing temperatures, they use loads more energy to heat the water and this affects time and cost. To stop that pesky frost, try insulating the dishwasher by placing a blanket around it, keeping them snug as a bug. This added layer of protection will not only help maintain the water temperature, but it will also reduce energy consumption - win-win!

Stop that Damp with a Dehumidifier

Damp can be a stickler for any homeowner and the best way to combat the cold can often be found where you least expect it. During the day pop the dehumidifier on in any part of the home where you feel wet walls or if you see dark patches beginning to form. By dehumidifying your walls, you’ll remove any cold and moisture from the air in your home and stop any damp from forming.
