Get the house smelling really Christmassy with this kid-friendly take on mulled wine.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED...
- An orange
- A stick of cinnamon (plus extra to dress the glasses)
- Sugar-free blackcurrant cordial (or use standard cordial if preferred)
- 2 star anise
- 1 tsp mixed spice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
HERE'S HOW IT'S DONE...
-
1
In a pan, make up enough cordial for 6 people according to the instructions on the bottle, or to your preferred strength. Add the star anise, vanilla, a cinnamon stick, the spice and a couple of slices of orange.
-
2
Bring up to the boil, then simmer for a few minutes. Turn off the heat, replace the lid and set aside out of reach of children until it’s a little warmer than room temp, but NOT hot.
-
3
Pour the liquid into a bowl slowly – you should find that the spice has settled at the bottom, so by keeping the last tsp or two of liquid back, you can prevent the powder from passing into the bowl.
-
4
Bring the bowl to the table and ladle the mulled cordial into child-friendly beakers, avoiding the bits. Put some fresh orange slices into each cup with a stick of cinnamon to serve.
Let the kids enjoy their own non-alcoholic mulled ‘wine’!
