Now that spring is here, we thought we’d help out any birds who might be returning from their winter migration. To help them to feather their nests, we have built, and stocked a haBIRDashery shop. See what we did there?

Here's what you'll need...

  • A recycled container (we’ve used a crisp tube)
  • Thick card
  • Paint
  • Decorative craft materials
  • String or ribbon (for hanging)
  • Craft glue and spreader
  • Tissue paper (for papier mâché)
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Feathers and twigs (or any found materials that would work in a nest)

Here's how it's done...

  • 1

Cover the container with a layer of papier mâché, so that you have a base to paint onto. Let this dry. Then ask an adult to cut some holes big enough for birds to pop in and out of.

Using the container as a stencil, draw and cut out a piece of card, adding a couple of tabs to the card to help it stick in place. Use this as an extra floor level for your haBIRDashery shop. Stick into place using glue.

Paint the container. Imagine what you want your shop to look like, are you going to choose natural colours, brights, monochrome?

  • 4

Use other craft materials, patterned paper, markers etc, to decorate the outside of your shop.

  • 5

Add a long piece of ribbon or string to the lid to hang it up with.

  • 6

Cut a large circle from card and cut a slit to the centre, make this into a cone and stick onto the container, around the hanger. We decorated our roof with paper tiles.

Stock your haBIRDashery with feathers, twigs etc, hang it in the garden, and await your customers! You’ll have to keep quiet though! Shh!
