How about a little craft project to turn some of your old t-shirts into a boho table runner? You could make more than one and use them as placemats or several small ones as coasters.

As we’ find ourselves in the middle of summer, we’’re making the most of whatever light clothing we might have in our wardrobe. Some of it will be just lovely and make us feel great, some of it might be functional and some of it, well, might not be suitable to wear outside the house anymore. Most of us will have some old and frayed t-shirts lying around somewhere. You know the sort. Too old to wear without looking a little on the wrong side of casual and in a way too scruffy to give to a charity shop without feeling that we might offend somebody. On the other hand, the notion of just throwing them in the bin seems somewhat wrong and wasteful.

So, what to do? Well, how about a little craft project to turn some of your old t-shirts into a boho table runner. You could make more than one and use them as placemats or several small ones as coasters, though the latter one should only be used with sturdy tumblers as the surface is uneven and delicate glasses would risk falling over.

This particular little runner measures 30cm across and you will have to braid nearly 5 whole meters for that alone, so it’’s not something that you’’ll be able to complete in half an hour. However, if you have a sunny afternoon and are looking for something to do that is quite relaxing, then this could just be the thing.

here's what you'll need...

  • t-shirts in different colours (my whole project is based on 3 teeshirts, size 12)

here's how it's done...

Cut along the bottom of the t-shirt, all the way round and about 1 inch wide. Repeat cutting these strips until you’’re about ¾ up on the t-shirt. Don’’t worry about being too exact, the fabric will roll up a little and it won’’t show at all if it’’s a little wider or narrower.

Once you have all the strips, take the first three (one of each colour) and sew them together with a few stitches.

Now start braiding these three strips. Once you get to the end of one, sew on another strip of the same colour. Repeat until you have about 5 meters.

Once you get to the end, trim to the same length and sew the three pieces together.

Lay the whole braid on a table and start rolling it up whilst keeping the pattern flat. With a couple of stitches, sew the first bit onto the part you’ve wrapped around to secure it.

Now slowly work your way round, wrapping (whilst keeping the braid flat) and securing it with small stitches. Once you get to the end, tuck the last bit under (the bottom) and secure with a few more stitches.

A fab little table mat that looks great and is environmentally friendly due to its upcycled nature. Pretty cool, don’’t you think?
