Tried and Tested: Does an energy-efficient washing machine actually save you money?

We all want to help out the environment, and we love the idea of saving money each month too. When it comes to the laundry, choosing an energy-efficient washing machine is really important to both. We challenged @lifeatstaustell to try out a Samsung model with the best energy rating and to answer the question on all of our lips; does it really does make a difference?

To help us get the picture, can you tell us a bit about the size of your household? How many washes do you typically do a week, and how big was your old washing machine?

In our household there’s me, my fiancé and Jenson, the beagle. Despite being a small household, we somehow produce an awful lot of washing. We also have a tendency to buy more detergent than we really need, and so we inevitably end up using more. Our previous model was 7kg, so moving up to a 9kg one made it easy for us to reduce the amount of washing that we do. Before, we’d probably do 3 or 4 loads a week, but with this one it’s gone down to 1 or 2.

How much money will you spend on the laundry, using your new machine?

So, having done some calculations, it roughly costs 30p for 2 hours. I mean, I can’t say much more than that...absolutely amazing. The eco function is brilliant too, and although it might take a little longer than a normal cycle, you’re bound to make a massive saving in the long run.

What do you like best about this model?

There are a few features which really stand out to me. The first one is the AddWash™ door, because it lets you add bits of clothing into the drum once the cycle has already started. It’s great for dealing with those stray socks that I always lose coming down the stairs (I’ve used it way more than I should have for this reason). I also love that you can choose a cycle that’s specially designed for certain items. There are so many to choose from, whether it’s bedding, rain jackets or soft cottons.

Do you think the AutoDose™ feature will help you save detergent?

I’ve got to be honest, I am guilty of free-pouring when it comes to detergent. We’d normally buy a large bottle, because it lasts us for a good 2 months at a time. But since having the new machine, we’ve been able to cut down a lot. The AutoDose™ feature is great, as once you’ve filled up the detergent drawer, it’ll automatically dispense the perfect amount for you. For us, we get about 5 washes worth before needing to refill it again. It tells you when it’s running low too, so it’ll definitely help us out. The fact that you don’t have to fill it up with detergent every time is a nice benefit too.

Do you think this model will actually save you money?

It’s definitely going to save us money, it already is. The more we use it, the more we’ll save. With the AutoDose™ feature and the energy rating combined, we’re looking forward to lightening our utility bills every month.

And finally, any other thoughts on your shiny new washing machine?

Yes! The WiFi function sends notifications to your smartphone, which is really handy. It tells me when my cycle has finished, and also makes it much easier to control (I’m guilty of a last-minute wash or two). Overall, we absolutely love it - it washes clothes well, they always come out smelling amazing, and it’s so eco-friendly.
