How to play music on my Apple HomePod

Find out how to play your favourite tunes and discover new stuff on your Apple HomePod.

Your Apple HomePod can do a load of cool stuff. From controlling your smart home tech to sending text messages for you. But, at it's core, it's a speaker. A very good speaker at that. Take advantage of that room-filling, party-starting sound quality and find out how you can play all your favourite tunes.

Control music with your voice

Not only can you ask Siri to play the music and podcasts you know and love, it'll also help you discover new stuff. If you've got an Apple Music subscription, you can use your voice to play from their huge catalog. That's over 45 million songs, by the way. No Apple Music? No problem, you can still use ask Siri to play from your iTunes purchases and iTunes Match tracks. It couldn't be simpler to get your groove on. Just say "Hey Siri", then tell that clever so-and-so whatever you want to hear, whether you want to skip it, repeat it, turn it up, whether you like it or dislike it and even more info about the track or artist. Told you it was smart.

Control music with AirPlay

If you've not got Apple Music or you've got a bit of a sore throat and can't be bothered chatting to Siri, you can stream audio from your iOS device to your HomePod via AirPlay:

  • Swipe to open the Control Center.
  • Press and hold the audio card, then tap the streaming logo in the top right of the box that pops up.
  • You'll then get a list of speakers. Tap your HomePod and bask in your glorious tunes.
  • This'll also work when you’re playing music through an app on your iOs device. Just tap on the streaming logo in that app and choose a speaker.
