How to Make a Face Cake

Get the kids creating in the kitchen with this cute face cake!

"We’ve been having some fun in the kitchen and had a go at making a face cake. This is the perfect activity to get the kids involved and encourage them to be creative with baking. The possibilities are endless, make anything from a cat face to a popular cartoon character, having fun is the only rule. On this occasion we decided to create a doll face, complete with button eyes, hair ribbons and rosy cheeks."

    Here's what you'll need...

    • Cake
    • Cake board
    • Coloured fondant icing sugar
    • Jam and hot water mix
    • Icing sugar
    • Shimmer dust
    • Piping icing tubes (depending on your image.)
    • Rolling pin
    • Sharp knife
    • Pastry brush
    • Shape cutters (depending on your image.)

    Here's how it's done... Step 1

Dust your work surface and the rolling pin with icing sugar. Roll out some of the fondant icing until it’s big enough to cover the cake board and just a few millimetres thick.

    Step 2

Spread a little jam over the board, so that it sticks, then lift the icing onto the board. Cut around the edges with a knife.

    Step 3

Repeat the last step, this time so that the icing is large enough to cover the top and side of your cake.

    Step 4

Level the top of your cake by slicing off a thin layer. Spread the jam and water mixture over the top and side and roll the fondant over the top. Press down all around, smoothing out as you go, and cut around the edge. (Any folds can be smoothed with a knife dipped in hot water.)

    Step 5

For the hair, repeat the process again, but don’t add jam. Once the icing is rolled out onto the face, cut the hairline design, and remove the excess. This can be stuck with a little water.

    Step 6

You can now sit the cake on top of the iced cake board and add decorations. We made button eyes by cutting circles with a small cutter and creating two holes in each one. We also shaped fondant to make pigtails, a stitched mouth, and hair accessories.

    Step 7

We added a little shimmer powder for rosy cheeks too.

We made a doll face on our cake, Minnie named her Dolly. What sort of face would you make?
