How to clean a vacuum cleaner for better suction and fresher air

Is your vacuum losing its oomph? Whether it’s a Dyson or a Shark, a quick clean can bring back that wow-factor in no time. It’s simple, takes just a few minutes, and you’ll notice the results straight away. A little TLC goes a long way.

Over time, bits of fluff and grime can sneak into all the wrong places, making it harder for your vacuum to pick up dirt and leaving the air less than pleasant. That’s because blockages can start to pong over time and spread it all over the house. A proper clean brings back that powerful performance and keeps everything smelling lovely. It’s easier than you think, and your home will thank you for it.

    Step 1: Unplug and prep

    • Before you start, make sure your vacuum is completely turned off. If it’s a corded model, switch it off and pull out the plug. For cordless versions, always remove the battery so everything is safe to handle.
    • Next, create a little cleaning station by spreading out an old towel or some newspaper on the floor to catch stray crumbs. Then grab a large rubbish bag and keep it close by to empty the bin into.

Step 2: Empty the dust bin or replace the bag

    • Pop out the dust bin on a bagless vacuum and tip it into your rubbish bag, but if you’ve got a bagged model, open the compartment slowly to avoid a mini dust storm.

Top tip: Drop the vacuum compartment inside a big bin bag before you take the old bag out. This keeps any loose dust neatly contained.

Step 3: Clean or replace filters

    • Check the HEPA or foam filters inside your vacuum. You’ll usually find them near the motor or dust compartment. Your user manual will point you in the right direction.
    • If they’re washable, give them a good rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, then leave them for at least 24 hours to dry completely before putting them back in, since a damp filter can damage your vacuum.
    • If they can’t be washed, gently tap them to shake off as much dust as possible. But it’s best to swap them out for new ones if they’re looking worse for wear to keep everything running smoothly. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your filters every 1 to 3 months. Doing this regularly makes a massive difference to suction.
    • Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning and replacement. This not only gives you the best results but also helps keep your warranty intact.

Important: Don’t put it back together until every part is fully dry. This’ll help stop mould and protect the motor.

Freshness tip: Want your vacuum to stay fresh? Do your nose a favour and add a teaspoon of baking soda to the bag or dust bin to neutralise odours.

Step 4: Clear the brush roll and nozzle

    • Check the brush roll and remove any hair or threads that have wrapped around it. If they’re stubborn, a quick snip with scissors will do the trick.
    • Once that’s sorted, wipe the nozzle and any attachments with a damp cloth to keep everything looking clean and working well.
    • While you’re at it, have a look for any blockages in the hose. If it’s a flexible model, a good shake should sort things out.

Handy hack: A lint roller works wonders for picking up fine dust from the brush roll in seconds.

Step 5: Wipe down the exterior

    • Give the outside a quick clean with a soft microfiber cloth and a little mild soap solution. It’ll keep your appliance looking spotless and in top shape.

    Step 6: Reassemble and test

    • Make sure everything is completely dry and fitted back securely.

Once that’s done, plug it in and give it a quick test. You should notice stronger suction straight away.

Extra allergy tips: Slip on gloves and a mask before you start to keep dust at bay. Empty the bin or change the bag outside so your home stays clean and fresh.

And that’s it! A few minutes of attention and your vacuum’s back to its best, ready to take on the crumbs that’ve inevitably piled up while it was out of action. Some things never change…
