Bonjour, how are you all? I hope you’re feeling crafty today as I’ve prepared a fun, easy and possibly quite useful little project for you. This is one that will bring some happy colours to your summer table and make your guests swoon – guaranteed! What I’m talking about are beautifully bright coloured mini cake stands. These are made from simple white egg cups and thrifted saucers. Chances are that no two will look the same, but I believe that that actually adds charm to a table.
here's what you'll need...
- 1 plain white egg cup per stand
- 1 saucer per stand
- old newspaper
- superglue
- a pencil
- craft enamel spray paints in your favourite colours (I used Rust-Oleum)
here's how it's done...
-
1
First turn your saucer upside down and place the egg cup in the middle. Using your pencil, draw around the egg cup.
-
2
Next, apply the superglue just inside the pencil circle. Place your egg cup on top of the glue inside the pencil circle and leave to dry for about 5 minutes.

Cover your table with newspaper and open your windows. If the weather is good enough (and not too windy) I would even advise to do the next step outside.
Give the spray paints a good shake (as per instructions) and start by applying a thin coat of paint to the cup and saucer.

Some patterns on the saucers will mean that you’ll need several coats to cover them. I left about 20 minutes between coats and it worked well.
Remember that lots of thin coats will always look better than one thick coat that starts to run.
Once you’re happy that all patterns are covered up, leave for 24 hours before using.

That’s it! I really hope you like this one as much as I do.
Until next time, happy crafting!
tip
You can carefully hand wash the mini stands in warm soapy water after using them.
Carole, thank you so much for sharing this project! I’m forever hunting for pretty individual cake stands but the store bought ones are usually too uniform or generic for my taste. This would be such a perfect summer project to accomplish! I just have one question about the spray paint you used: is it non-toxic? Isn’t there a risk that the cakes could “absorb” any chemicals from the enamel?
You did an amazing job, as always!
xx Ivana
Macarons and Pearls
Hi Ivana, thanks for your lovely comment, I’m really happy to hear that you want to try this project. As for the food safety issue: I’ve had a search online and there don’t seem to be any warnings about the enamel paints. I would think they’re perfectly safe as long as they’re completely dry and you give them a quick wash in warm, soapy water before use. I would probably not store cakes for weeks on end like this, but then the cakes wouldn’t be any good anyway ;-) I hope this helps? xo
I love this idea! Now to find a cup and saucer that will work for this project!
Wish I had super glue to hand just dying to start looks just what I need for tea dances
