    Coffee Styles Explained

    From a shot of espresso to a mugful of mocha, there are tons of different types of coffee styles to choose between.

    Despite 80% of UK drinking coffee every day, 42% couldn’t explain the difference between cafe-style drinks. With only 17% saying they would confidently explain most of them.

    16% say they prefer lattes and 14% prefer cappuccinos, but do you know the difference?

    The difference comes down to texture and milk-to-coffee ratio, so here’s all the info you need to make your favourite.

    Espresso

    A rich, intense shot of concentrated coffee without milk. Making espresso is the first step to making most other drinks.

    Americano

    Also known as a black coffee, it’s a shot of espresso topped up with hot water for a smooth, bigger cupful.

    Latte

    Smooth and creamy, lattes are made with a shot of espresso mixed with lots of steamed milk and foam – ideal for adding art on top.

    Cappuccino

    Stronger than a latte but keeping the frothy texture, a cappuccino is one part coffee, two parts steamed milk and foam.

    Flat white

    Think latte without the frothy texture, this style uses a shot of espresso mixed with steamed milk. The result is a velvety-smooth, strong cup of coffee.

    Mocha

    For a chocolate fix, mochas have a mix of espresso, steamed milk and cocoa powder or syrup for a sweet, rich blend.

    Iced coffee

    Brewed hot then chilled over ice, this style can be left black or topped with milk to suit your taste.
