    How to make a latte

When it comes to making the perfect latte, the secret to success is in the milk frothing. Luckily, this guide will walk you through everything from brewing the best espresso to adding a silky-smooth crema, you can even try your hand at latte art if you fancy. It’s not as hard as it looks!

First thing’s first, get started with the perfect base by making an espresso the right way.

    Light lattes

Need something creamier than a cappuccino? Go for a latte.

Made with a shot of espresso and lots of steamed milk topped with foam, lattes offer a rich, creamy texture and a mild coffee taste. Served in cups ranging from 240–360ml, they’re ideal for adding a touch of latte art if you’re feeling fancy.

    Ingredients:

    • 30-60ml espresso
    • 200-300ml milk
    • Cocoa or cinnamon for sprinkling (optional)

    Here's how it's done

    Step 1

Brew the espresso – 1 shot or 2 to suit your mood.

    Step 2

Steam the milk at around 65°C, stretching it out so the volume goes up by about 10-15% - that’s the foam building. Once done, tap the jug and swirl it to disperse any bigger bubbles.

    Step 3

Pour the milk into the espresso from high up so the milk goes below the surface, getting gradually closer as the cup fills up.

    Tips

For a richer flavour, whole milk is your best bet, it gives your latte that extra creamy depth. If you're going dairy-free, barista-style plant milks are a great alternative and froth beautifully. No steam wand? No problem. Just heat your milk and froth it using a French press, whisk, or milk frother to get that café-style texture at home.
