How to make a flat white

With a coffee machine on hand, getting every element of your favourite coffee just right is a piece of cake.

This guide will take you through how to get the most out of your machine and enjoy great-tasting flat whites, time and time again. It starts with the perfect espresso

    Flavourful flat whites

Fancy ditching the froth? If you’re after a rich drink with a smoother texture, try this style made with a shot of espresso and steamed milk. Served in cups between 150–210ml, it’s velvety and creamier than a cappuccino or latte, with just the right balance of milk for a medium-strength coffee and a satisfyingly smooth finish.

    Ingredients:

    • 60ml espresso
    • 120ml milk
    • (Optional) cocoa or cinnamon for sprinkling

    Here's how it's done

    Step 1

Brew the espresso – 1 shot or 2 to suit your mood.

    Step 2

Steam the milk to create microfoam by adding less air than with a cappuccino or latte – with smaller bubbles than normal foam, it’ll be smooth, not frothy. Gently swirl the jug to disperse any big bubbles.

    Step 3

Pour the milk into the espresso from high up so the milk goes below the surface, getting gradually closer as the cup fills up. The milk should mix with the coffee, not sit on top like a cappuccino.

(Optional) dust with cocoa or cinnamon.

    Tips

For the best texture in a flat white, opt for whole milk or barista-style oat milk.
