Whether you're a seasoned air fryer fan or just getting started, chances are you've had a few questions pop up while cooking. From what you can and can’t cook or how to clean it properly, we’ve got you covered.

To clear up the confusion, Isabella Forgione, AO’s small appliance expert, answers your most searched air fryer questions.

What can you cook in an air fryer?

Air fryers have become a household favourite due to their speed and versatility. If you’d usually roast, bake or grill something in a traditional oven, chances are it’ll work brilliantly in an air fryer – and often faster and with less oil.

From everyday staples like chips, chicken, and fish to perfectly roasted vegetables, air fryers can handle it all. Many models now come with lots of different cooking functions like baking, frying, roasting, dehydrating and grilling and even reheating.

Here’s a few surprising things that can be cooked in an air fryer.

What cannot be cooked in an air fryer?

While air fryers are super versatile, some dishes are better suited to the hob or oven.

Saucy dishes like Bolognese or chilli can splatter due to the hot circulating air, creating a mess or even a safety risk.

Wet batter (like homemade battered fish) also tends to drip through the basket before it cooks properly, which means uneven results and a sticky clean-up job. Stick to pre-battered or breaded foods if you’re craving that crispy coating.

Can you chuck it in the air fryer? Let’s see…

Can you put raw meat in an air fryer?

Absolutely. Air fryers are great for cooking raw meats like chicken, steaks, sausages or pork chops. Just make sure you check it’s fully cooked through before serving.

Can you cook pasta in an air fryer?

No - pasta needs to be boiled in water, which is something an air fryer can’t do. You’re better off sticking with a traditional hob or oven for pasta dishes.

Can you put tin foil in an air fryer?

It’s best not to. Similar to air fryer liners, there are pros and cons to putting tin foil in an air fryer. Air fryers work by blowing hot air around the basket to cook food. Having a tin foil or liner at the bottom of the basket can obstruct airflow, and as a result, your food may not cook as you want it.

Can you put frozen chips in an air fryer?

Definitely. Frozen chips are one of the most popular air fryer foods. Just throw them in and give the basket a shake halfway through cooking. You’ll get crispy, golden chips without needing much oil.

Can you fit a whole chicken in an air fryer?

That depends on the size of your air fryer. Larger-capacity models, particularly those with dual drawers or rotisserie functions, are ideal for whole chickens. Just make sure there’s room for hot air to circulate around the bird so it cooks evenly.

    Can air fryers toast bread?

Technically yes, but unless your air fryer has a dedicated toast setting, you might find the results a bit uneven. A regular toaster is still your best bet for even toast.

    Top Tip

How to cook jacket potatoes in an air fryer?

Start by pricking the potatoes and rubbing them with a little oil and salt. Pop them in the air fryer at 200°C for about 35–40 minutes (depending on size). Make sure to check and turn halfway through. The skin will be crisp, and the inside fluffy.

    Cleaning your air fryer

Can I clean my air fryer by putting water in it and turning it on?

No, never put water in the draw and switch it on. This is unsafe and can damage the appliance.

How do you clean the inside of an air fryer?

First, always unplug your air fryer and let it cool completely. Then follow these steps depending on the style:

    Grill-style air fryers

Remove the grill plate and drip tray, soak in warm soapy water, and scrub away grease. Wipe the inside of the unit with a damp cloth to remove any residue before replacing the parts.

    Basket-style air fryers

Once cooled, remove the basket and clean it with a soft brush and warm soapy water. Wipe down the interior and exterior with a damp paper towel.

Many parts are dishwasher safe – just check the manufacturer’s instructions before popping them in.

How do you remove sticky residue from an air fryer?

Grease build-up can cause unpleasant odours, uneven cooking and, in worst cases, fire risks. Regular cleaning after each use is essential to keep your air fryer working efficiently and safely.

Keeping your air fryer clean means it’ll last longer too. Grease and leftover food can damage the internal components, and those repairs and replacements can be expensive.

What is the smallest air fryer size?

Air fryers come in different sizes to suit different serving capacities. Smaller models with a single drawer are suitable for 2-3 servings, while models with a small dual drawer capacity are ideal for family servings of 4-6 helpings. If you need to cater to a larger family, you can opt for models with a large dual drawer. If you’re struggling to choose, why not view our buying guide.
