How to clean your washing machine

Keeping your washing machine in top shape is essential for optimal performance and to prevent unpleasant odours. Katy Roberts, our washing machine expert, shares her step-by-step guide on how to clean this hardworking appliance effectively. From tackling the filter and using natural solutions like vinegar and baking soda to deep-cleaning the detergent drawer and door seal, these tips will help you maintain a fresh, efficient washing machine. Here’s how to keep your machine running smoothly!

    Cleaning the filter

To clean the filter, first turn off your machine. The filter is usually located at the bottom front, behind a small access panel. Open the cover, unscrew the filter cap, and carefully pull the filter out. It's a good idea to place a towel or shallow container underneath to catch any water that may be trapped inside. Once removed, rinse the filter under hot running water to remove any debris such as lint, coins, or hair. If there are any stubborn particles, use a bristle brush or old toothbrush to scrub them away. After cleaning, securely screw the filter back in place and close the cover. Keeping the filter clean not only helps maintain the performance of your washing machine but also prevents potential blockages or unpleasant smells.

    Natural cleaning solution

For a natural cleaning solution, vinegar and baking soda work wonders. They will help remove bacteria, mould, and detergent residue from the inside of the machine. Pour one cup of white vinegar into the detergent drawer and half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum.

Run the washing machine on an empty, hot cycle. This combination helps break down detergent build-up, tackle odours, and eliminate mould. Afterwards, wipe down the door seal and drum with a clean cloth. Leaving the door slightly ajar after each wash helps air circulate, preventing moisture build-up and bad smells.

    Deep cleaning the detergent drawer

For a deep clean, once you've cleaned the inside of the drum and filter, it's time to clean the detergent drawer. Remove the detergent drawer and scrub it with a toothbrush and hot, soapy water to get rid of detergent build-up.

    Cleaning the door seal

Don't forget to clean the door seal, as this area often traps dirt and grime. Gently pull back the rubber door seal to expose the area underneath. Using a clean cloth or sponge, wipe away any loose grime. For tougher spots, mix a solution of hot water and white vinegar. Dip the cloth into the solution and thoroughly clean the inside of the seal, paying close attention to any areas with visible mould or dirt. Once the seal is clean, wipe it down with a dry cloth to remove any moisture.
