How to save battery on your phone

Make your phone power go further and help it run at its best for longer in the process.

Little changes can make a big difference to battery life. Things like tinkering with screen settings, apps, notifications, and connectivity will mean you’ll spend less time searching for a charger and more time using your phone when it matters.

Reduce your screen brightness or refresh rate

Did you know that the screen is one of the biggest battery drains? We’ve got a few small suggestions that could add minutes without you missing out.

    1. Set your screen brightness to a lower level permanently or turn on Auto Brightness. It’ll dim the screen where there’s enough natural light and ramp it up when you’re in the dark.

    2. If your phone supports high refresh rates (e.g. 120Hz), switch to a lower one. You won’t need it unless you’re gaming or watching sport.

    3. Shorten how long it takes your screen to turn off when you’re not using it. You can usually set your phone screen to go off after as little as 15 seconds of inactivity.

    Use low power mode

It’ll stop background activity you don’t need. It could make things run a little slower, depending on what you’re doing. But it’s certainly a great option when you’re away from a charger on a long day.

    Manage background app activity

This’ll stop apps that constantly refresh or track data in the background. You’ll be able to turn it on easily from your general ‘settings’ or ‘battery’ menu.

    Turn off location services

Set location access to ‘While using the app’ or turn it off altogether for apps that don’t truly need it. You can also turn off general location features you don’t use, like weather widgets, maps or Bluetooth.

    Disable push notifications

Every notification wakes your screen, so it’s a good idea to turn off anything non-essential. You can get a notification summary on iPhone or silent notifications on Android that’ll make sure you don’t miss anything without waking your screen multiple times.

    Connectivity tips

    • Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data whenever you can to save some battery power and pennies.
    • Turn off Bluetooth if you’re not using it to stop it from sending signals.
    • Searching for signal can drain your battery, so if you’re in a weak area, turn on airplane mode to save battery until you’re in a different location.

    Helpful habits

    • Update apps and software regularly – these sometimes include upgrades that could impact battery life.
    • Avoid extreme heat or cold because this can affect chemical reactions happening within the battery.
    • Try to keep your battery level in a mid-range rather than constantly hitting 0%. It’s the best way to avoid putting your battery under stress.
