If you’ve made the decision to jump ship and bag yourself better costs and coverage, you’ll be pleased to know the process is easier than ever. But there are a few things worth knowing to make sure you won’t be hit with unexpected fees or a break in service. Let’s get into it.
Early exit fees
The best time to switch networks is when you’re not in a contract, but if you are, there could be a cost for leaving early. It could be worth paying the fee if you’ll make a hefty saving by switching early, but it’s important to know before you make the call. The easiest way to find out where you stand is to text INFO to 85075 and your network will send you details of your plan. Remember, you might be paying for your service plan and phone separately. In which case, even if you move, you’ll still need to pay for your device.
Coverage, signal & data speeds
Price is important, but the last thing you want is sketchy coverage that makes loading your train ticket on the daily commute borderline fine-worthy. Each network offers different levels of coverage in different areas, so check the coverage map of the network you’re thinking of moving to. They’re usually easy to find on network providers’ websites. You’ll be able to see signal strength, average data speeds and whether you’ll get 4G or 5G in places you spend the most time, like home and work.
Plan comparison
Everyone uses their phone differently, which is why networks make plans to reflect that. If you travel a lot, you’ll want impressive roaming allowances. If your family live abroad, you might want international minutes. It’s important to make sure you’ve got what you need. And don’t forget about the basics, like minutes and data, but weigh up if you could be paying extra for things you don’t need. In a nutshell, the best plan is personalised.
Transfer your number
Great news – it’s really easy to take your number with you when you switch. Just text PAC to 65075. It’s free, works on all UK networks, and you’ll usually get a reply in seconds. Codes are valid for 30 days, so you’ll need to hand it to your new provider before it expires. In most cases, your number will move over within one working day, and the network take care of it all for you.
Compatibility
Make sure your phone’s unlocked so it can be used on another network. Most newer phones are already unlocked, but it’s always worth checking. You’ll usually find the answer in your ‘settings’ tab. Look out for a ‘network lock’, ‘SIM status’, or ‘mobile network’ option. And keep in mind that older phones might not fully support 5G, so you might not get the full benefits even if your network provides it.
Extra costs to consider
As well as early exit fees, it’s good to ask about any hidden fees that aren’t the norm. After you switch, you might receive a final bill from your old provider for things like pro‑rata charges for partial usage or add‑ons already billed in advance. And on the new network’s side, check for any setup fees or upfront charges so you know exactly what to expect in your first bill.
