How to clean your security camera

Hayley Brown, AO’s smart home expert, shared her thoughts on why cleaning your appliances is very important.

Why is it so important to clean security cameras?

Cleaning your security camera is important because frankly, if it isn’t clean then all you’re left with is blurry images. Blurry or obstructed footage is no help at all, particularly if you’re trying to keep your home safe. Similarly, a dirty lens can also trigger false motion alerts which can be more than annoying at night.

What is the best method to cleaning your security camera?

When cleaning your security camera, first switch it off at the mains as cleaning a live camera can damage the lens. Use a soft brush to loosen any dust, cobwebs or leaves that may have made home by your camera – a clean, dry paintbrush will work wonders here.

Next, dampen a cloth with a glass cleaner and wipe the lens and casing gently. Once you’re happy with your work, turn it back on and check for any smudges or dirt you may have missed.

How often should you clean your cameras?

Try to clean your cameras once every two months if these are outdoor cameras, or after every four months if these are indoors instead. Should you live near a busy road or if it’s pointed towards a garden, then you may need to check this a bit more frequently.
