How to style flicked out ends with a Dyson Airwrap
With a smooth finish and a subtle lift, flicked out ends are more than your typical day-to-day ‘do. While this style is no stranger to the red carpet, there’s no reason why you can’t rock this look at any occasion.
What you’ll need:
- Dyson Airwrap
- The pre-styling dryer attachment
- 40mm Airwrap barrel
- Hair clips
- Blow-dry cream
- Smoothing cream
How it’s done:
Step 1: Wash and prep
- Start with towel-dried hair and add your heat-protecting blow-dry cream to the mid-lengths and ends, smoothing any excess up towards to the roots.
Extra tip:
- If you want an even sleeker finish, use a comb to spread the product evenly before going in with your Dyson Airwrap.
Step 2: Rough dry
- Attach the pre-styling dryer to remove 80-90% of the moisture from your hair, so it’s still slightly damp before you start styling properly.
Step 3: Section your hair
- Divide your hair into small, even sections with your hair clips, keeping the bottom layers separate from the top. This will help your 40mm curling barrel grip the ends more consistently for a clean, long-lasting shape.
Step 4: Ready to style
- Place the 40mm curling barrel at the end of 1 section at a time, so the airflow can only catch the last 2-4 inches.
- Roll it upwards just enough to wrap the end and hold for 5-8 seconds — if you’ve got really thick hair, you might need to hold for up to 10 seconds.
- Finish it off with a cool shot for 3-5 seconds to set in the shape.
- Release the section and let your hair completely cool before touching it.
- Repeat this step across all the small sections, keeping the height and direction the same for a consistently polished flick.
- When you’ve finished your whole head, give it 30-60 seconds to make sure every strand is cool before gently separating the ends with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb.
Extra tips:
- For a softer, natural-looking finish, you can use the round brush instead, rolling the ends up 2-3 inches (that’ll stop it getting tangled).
- Adding a small amount of heat-protecting blow-dry cream or smoothing cream can keep the ends sleeker.
- For the cleanest, most polished flicked-out ends, finish them off with the flyaway attachment at the end to smooth out any loose strands. Make sure you use gentle, slow passes to maintain the direction.
Step 5: The finishing touches
- For more exaggerated flicks, run a comb through the ends to make sure they’re all going in the right direction and add smoothing cream to the ends to tame any frizz.
- If you want some extra hold on the ends, you can add a small amount of mousse or a light, flexible hairspray to keep it in place for longer without making it crunchy.
Top tip:
Depending on your hair length and cut, your look will turn out a little different. If you’re hair is layered and textured, the flicks will be higher up. But if your hair is longer with a little more shape, the flicks will be at the bottom going backwards.
