How to shape defined curls with a Dyson Airwrap

If you’re wondering what fancy new styles you can achieve with your Dyson Airwrap, you're in the right place. We've got the go-to guide that'll help you get perfect curls in 5 simple steps.

These bold defined curls are a stylish way to add some bounce to your day-to-day, from the office to the evening outing. All you need is your Airwap and a handful of products to make your hair goals a reality.

    What you’ll need:

    • Dyson Airwrap
    • The pre-styling dryer attachment
    • 30mm Airwrap barrels
    • Hair clips
    • Volumising mousse
    • Root boost spray
    • Light hairspray

    How it’s done:

    Step 1: Wash and prep

    • Work a volumising mousse through clean, damp hair, from the middle to the ends. This helps the curls hold that must-have bouncy shape without feeling heavy.
    • Mist a root boost spray over the top. This'll help lift the roots and create volume that'll last all day.
    • Then, comb through your hair so the products are spread evenly to help give you more consistent curls.

    Step 2: Rough dry

    • Using your Airwrap's pre-styling attachment, dry your hair about 80% of the way.

    Top tips

    • You want to make sure you’re working with damp hair, not soaking wet or completely dry.
    • This helps improve curl formation, helps them last longer, speeds up styling, and adds volume.

    Step 3: Section your hair

    • Use hair clips to divide your hair into clear layers, separating the bottom from the top.
    • Start by parting your hair horizontally from ear to ear, then clip the top section out of the way.

    Step 4: Style

    • Starting from the bottom, wrap your hair around the 30mm Airwrap barrel in roughly 1-inch sections at a time.
    • Hold each curl for 10 – 15 seconds, release, and then use the cool shot function right away to set the shape.
    • Repeat this process section by section, keeping the styling time the same for each one to create consistent, bouncy curls.

    Top tips

    • For an even better hold, after releasing each curl, gently twist it into a ring, and clip it to your scalp while it cools. This helps the curls keep their shape for longer.
    • Leave the clips in until you’ve finished styling each section. Then, remove them one section at a time.

    Step 5: Final touches

    • Spritz a light hairspray over the curls to make sure they stay put.
    • Try not to touch your curls until they’ve fully cooled, then gently separate them with your fingers for a more natural finish.

    Top tips

    • Don’t brush your curls right after styling. This can break the curl pattern, meaning the style you worked hard for will drop faster.
    • To keep curls around for as long as possible, avoid running your hands through your hair while it’s warm, try switching to a satin pillowcase or bonnet, and give two-day old curls a refresh with a small amount of curl-friendly product on the ends.

Once you've perfected the technique, flawless, bouncy waves will become one of your staple styles.
