Your appliance needs time to breathe
When your new fridge or freezer has just been delivered, you should leave it for at least four hours before turning it on to let the gas inside settle. Skipping this step voids your manufacturer warranty, so make sure to factor this into your plans.
A clean fridge works better
Cleaning the fridges drain hole will keep it in tip-top shape. To do this, turn off the appliance and remove any food that’s in it, uncover the drain hole and use the unblocking tool that came with it to get rid of any food residue or grease. Then you can pop the cover back and turn your appliance back on. Good as new.
There’s a hack to keep your fridge smelling fresh
Popping a dish of baking soda in your fridge and freezer will neutralise lingering smells.
It’s worth leaving space for ventilation
To make sure your appliance is ventilating properly, leave 5cm on each side and at the back. That’ll let air circulate around it and keep it running smoothly.
Another way to use an ice cube tray
Hate food waste but running out of space? Try freezing stocks, sauces, and soups in your ice cube tray. It’s also a great hack for herbs in oil.

If you’re unsure about temperature settings on your fridge and freezer, the higher the number, the colder it’ll be. It’s worth adjusting this to suit how empty or full each cabinet is.
You can pop shelves in the dishwasher
Most fridge drawers and shelves are dishwasher safe, so you can pop them on a normal cycle when they need a spruce. Just check there’re no LED components first.

- How to defrost a fridge freezer without turning it off?
While it is possible to defrost your fridge freezer without turning it off, we wouldn’t recommend it. While you have the door open, the freezer will still be trying to keep everything frozen, adding unnecessary pennies to your electricity bill and risking burning out the motor.
- How long do fridge freezers last?
On average, fridge freezers are designed to last between 10 and 20 years.
- How much does a fridge freezer cost to run?
If you had an A-rated fridge freezer that used approximately 109 kWh annually with a tariff of 29p per kWh, then it would cost roughly £458 to run this appliance over 10 years. However, with electricity tariffs changing frequently it’s hard to give an accurate cost, but we do have an energy cost calculator to help you find a ballpark figure.
- What temperature should a fridge freezer be?
The ideal temperature for your fridge should be between 3°C and 5°C. Meanwhile, a freezer needs to be super cold at around -18°C. If you need to make any adjustments to your fridge freezer, just be aware that changes can take up to 24 hours to adjust.

Installing an integrated fridge freezer requires feeding the plug to the chosen socket, popping the appliance in the assigned cupboard space and installing everything that’s needed to pop the cupboard doors on. However, unless you’re an experienced DIYer, this can be a tricky job.
