The best methods for hiding TV cables

TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players. Is the look of your room being ruined by cables everywhere? We’ve got tons of tips to keep wires neatly out of sight.

Correct us if we’re wrong, but when you were planning your living room – picking the perfect couch, the nicest rug, the fanciest telly – you probably didn’t picture cables trailing all over. No? Us either, but somehow it always ends up happening.

Luckily this interior design blunder is pretty easy to put right. We’ve put together all the best methods to keep those wires out of sight for good.

    Wall mount your TV

Not only does a wall mounted TV look, sleek, modern and all-around pretty impressive, but it’s also one of the easiest ways to keep wires out of the way.

A good wall bracket keeps things looking streamlined, and since lots of brackets come with small gaps or built-in sections to neatly hide cables away, there’s more ways to make sure they’re not messing up your look. Some even include cable clips, sleeves, or channels along the arms to keep everything neatly tucked away.

For the cleanest finish, it’s also worth thinking about what’s behind the screen. If your power socket and any other devices (think Wi-Fi router) are behind the TV, it’s easier to keep all the cables out of sight.

Sounds good? You can shop our full range of TV brackets here.

But if you’re a little lost on which one to go for (we get it), we’ve got a handy buying guide here.

Hide them inside a stud wall

Okay, so you’ve got your TV mounted – it’s looking pretty stylish by the way. Did you know, you can actually hide cables inside the wall?

It’s the best way to keep everything completely out of sight, no matter the angle – it does take a bit more effort than the other options. But the payoff is a super clean finish that’s hard to beat.

As long as you’ve got a plasterboard stud wall, you can run your wires through the wall cavity. You’ll need to use recessed brush plates and a flexible conduit (you can pick these up from most DIY stores) to guide the cables through the wall and back out to the nearest socket – but once it’s done, it’s done.

    Run cables along skirting boards

If your cables have got a long way to go, another good way to keep things organised is to guide them along to the top of your skirting boards. All it takes is some adhesive clips to keep them securely in place.

Just make sure you’ve routed them along properly so there’s no trip hazards or damage to the equipment.

    Use paintable trunking

But if you’ve got brick walls, or you’re renting and can’t make any big changes, paintable trunking is the next best thing.

It’s a plastic channel that sticks to your walls, hiding all the cables inside. All you have to do is stick it to the wall using the included adhesive, open it up, pop the wires inside, and click it shut.

You can even paint it whatever colour you like so that it blends in.

    Pop them behind furniture

Or, if you’ve got your TV on a stand, hiding cables behind furniture is a simple go-to.

Run them down the back of the stand, tuck them behind drawers, or use clips to guide them out of sight. Some TV stands even come with built-in channels to funnel wires where they’ll be fully hidden.

If you fancy picking up a stand that’ll keep your cables organised, you can find them all here.

Pick up a cable management box

After an extra easy option that’s ready right out of the package? A cable management box is a super simple way to keep your cables all in one place.

Just pop all the cables in the box and route them to the nearest outlet. If you need to switch anything around or unplug something, it’s easy to just open the lid up and lift a cable out.

It’s a great way to keep things tidy, but the box itself will probably still be visible. And, depending where your plug socket is, you might still have a little cable on show.

However you choose to do it, keeping your cables organised will help give your living room a cleaner look and keep everyday life safer too. And of course, all these methods work anywhere you’ve got a lot of wires or a TV, like bedrooms and studies. For more TV inspiration and advice, explore our TV & entertainment hub.
