Microwaves come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re tight on counter space or just need something for the odd cuppa or soup, a compact model will do the trick. The higher the power, the quicker your food cooks. Most microwaves sit between 700W and 1000W, so if you’re always in a rush (who isn’t?) aim for the top end. And there are different types too, like grill models for a crispy finish or a combi that uses the same tech as a convection oven. As for features, auto-cook programs take out the guesswork, while defrost functions can help you prep meals faster.
Microwaves come in 4 main types. Solo models are great for simple heating and defrosting. Grill microwaves add a crispy finish to your meals. Combi models combine microwave, grill and oven functions for full-on cooking versatility. And built-in microwaves slot neatly into your kitchen units for a sleek look. Whether you’re warming up leftovers or baking a lasagne, there’s a microwave to suit your needs.
Choosing the right size microwave is all about space and needs. If you’ve got a smaller kitchen or just use it for quick reheats, a compact model (around 17–20L) will do nicely. Bigger households or keen cooks might want something roomier – 25L or more gives you space for larger dishes and more features. Just double-check your counter or cabinet measurements before you buy, so it fits like a glove and doesn’t block anything important like plug sockets or cupboard doors. "
Look out for features that make life easier. Auto-cook programs take the guesswork out of heating, while defrost by weight is a game-changer for frozen food. Child locks are great if you’ve got little ones around, and quick-start buttons are perfect for speedy snacks. If you’re into multitasking, multi-stage cooking lets you defrost and cook in one go. And don’t forget the basics, like easy-clean interiors and a digital display.
Yes, and they’re great for saving on your bills while still getting the job done. Look for models with inverter technology, which uses power more efficiently and cooks food evenly. Eco modes are handy too, cutting down on standby energy when you’re not using it. And if you’re going for a combi model, some have smart sensors that adjust cooking time automatically, so you’re not wasting heat.
