Our useful measuring guide will give you all the info you need to make sure your new washing machine will fit perfectly in your home.
How to measure
As a rule of thumb, the easiest way to get the measurements for a new washing machine or washer dryer is to measure your old one and use that as a guide. If you’re starting from scratch, a good thing to remember is that the pipes at the back of the machine can take up to 7cm of room, so you'll need to factor that in, no matter which model you choose.
Freestanding washing machines
You’re measuring for a freestanding washing machine or washer dryer if: the machine you choose sits under a work surface or anywhere there is a water connection.
Freestanding washing machines usually come in standard sizes so that they fit under a worktop. Grab a tape measure and measure the height, width and depth of the space you want it to fit in. Write them down so you can refer back to these measurements later when browsing.

Freestanding washing machines aren’t designed to sit behind your cupboard doors.
Just make sure you measure the space where you want the washing machine to live.
Add 7cm onto the depth of the appliance you are considering for pipes needed for connection.
When sizing up your space, make sure you start measuring its depth from in front of any plugs or pipes, and not from the wall itself.
Integrated washing machines
You are measuring for an integrated washing machine or washer dryer if: the machine you are choosing needs to be fitted in between your kitchen worktops with a cabinet door on the front of it.
Integrated washing machines also come in standard sizes. They tend to be slightly smaller in depth than freestanding ones, so that they fit nicely into your kitchen cabinetry. Again, you should always measure the height, width and depth of the unit you want it to fit into and choose a model you know will fit comfortably inside.
