How to clean your DVD or Blu-ray player

Find out how to give your DVD Player or Blu-ray player a good clean with this handy guide

DVD and Blu-ray Players need cleaning on a regular basis to keep them working as they should. If dust and dirt becomes caught, you’re likely to experience playback issues. Not what you need when it’s movie night. We’ll guide you through the three key places you’ll need to clean to keep your player as good as new.

    Before you get started

It’s worth removing any discs from the player before you begin, just to prevent them from jamming. As with any electronic bit of kit, it’s a good idea to unplug it to be on the safe side. Finally, remove it from its stand if it’s on one; that way you can wipe it down freely and get to all those hard to reach places.

    Cooling vents

The cooling vents need to be cleaned around once a month. They tend to attract a lot of dust which can stop fresh air getting into the player and cause overheating. Particles of dust can even wriggle their way onto the lens, mess up the picture and sometimes stop the player from reading any discs at all. So, every month, just give the vents a quick once over with a soft brush and that should be enough to keep those movies playing as they should.

    Outer case

If you’ve spilt something on the outer case of your player, or you feel like the dust is getting a bit too much, it’ll need a quick clean. Lightly dampen a soft cloth and wipe gently across the front, top and side of your machine to get rid of those pesky dust particles or that spillage. It’s really important not to clean the back of the player or any ports with the same damp cloth because of all the small electrical components. Instead, use a dry cloth and gently wipe it down.

    Cleaning the lens

If discs are skipping, distorting or freezing, you might think that your player is on the blink, but that’s not always the case. Playback problems can be caused by a dirty lens so it’s definitely worth giving it a clean if you’re experiencing any issues.

There are quite a few cleaning products out there and we would heartily recommend using a quality lens cleaning disc that doesn’t use a dry brush. A dry brush can scratch the laser lens and scatter dust even further, causing more trouble and damage. A good liquid cleaning kit is much more effective and simple to use. It’s crucial to make sure you use a Blu-ray cleaner for your Blu-ray Player and a DVD cleaner for your DVD Player. Mixing them up can cause all kinds of damage to the lens.

Once you've found the right kit, follow these simple steps

    Step 1

First of all, make sure you’re applying the recommended amount of liquid cleaner. Double check with your manual that you’re using the right quantity.

    Step 2

Place the disc in the machine and it should automatically start working.

    Step 3

Sit back, relax and let it get to work. Most cleaning discs will show something on screen and let you know when it’s finished.

    Step 4

When it’s done, remove the disc and say hello to your sparklingly clean player!
