Your iron deserves better than hard water. Use distilled or demineralized water to keep it running like a champ—no limescale, no drama.
Mix baking soda and water into a paste, rub it on a cool soleplate, and wipe it off with a damp cloth. Goodbye burnt residue!
Your leafy pals looking a little droopy? Lightly steam around the leaves (not too close!). It mimics the humidity they love and gives them a quick perk-up.
Use the steamer to heat up stubborn sticker gunk on jars or containers. The steam loosens the adhesive, and it peels off like a dream—no gross residue left behind.

Steaming your clothes is a great alternative to ironing as it’s quicker and safer for delicate materials. Ironing applies heat directly to your tops and trousers which can be more effective on tough creases, but harder on your fabrics.
Handheld steamers make a good investment if you travel a lot or need to quickly get wrinkles out of work shirts. They’re particularly gentle on delicate fabrics too.
Steam generator irons take up a bit more space, but they have a higher steam output than a standard steam iron. So, if you want more power, they’re a great choice.
Choosing the right steam generator iron depends on what you’re after. Some things to look out for are a smooth soleplate that’ll glide seamlessly over your clothes, one that’s lightweight so it's easy to lift, and the stronger the steam output, the more powerful it is.
When you need to descale your steam generator iron, check the manufacturer’s manual for instructions tailored to your model. This will make sure that you’re doing everything right.
Garment steamers are really hygienic as the high-temperature steam can kill bacteria and banish odours. It’s a great way to refresh a once-worn outfit. However, it’s not the same as popping your clothes in the wash, so you’ll still need your machine for that.
Let off some steam with an iron from AO
If you don’t have time to spend ages at the ironing board, look out for a steam iron. The hot mist glides over your clothes, releasing creases with ease. Look out for models with a higher steam output of around 50 grams per minute as these models will blast through wrinkles seamlessly.
Need a bit more power for a massive pile of laundry? Then a steam generator iron might be the one for you. As the name suggests, these clever models come with built-in boilers that deliver high-pressure steam, which does away with creases like nobody’s business.
Then there’s garment steamers. These models are great for getting wrinkles out as you go. They’re compact and don’t need you to faff about with an ironing board to work. Just hang up your clothes, steam them vertically, and you’re good to go.
Big brands, small prices
From Russell Hobbs to Tefal, there are tons of top-notch brands that’ll make the best steam iron for your laundry pile. Tower and Morphy Richards even make cordless irons, so that’s one less thing to faff with (or get tangled up with!) Ceramic soleplates are also a great feature to look for as they effortlessly glide over all sorts of fabrics, without causing more creases than they remove. Some models even come with different settings, so you can tailor the heat and steam level to suit your clothes. Ramp it up for linen and soften it down for silk. Don’t forget about safety features like auto-shut off, large tanks to avoid refilling and anti-drip spouts.
