Accept & closeDon’t feel like letting everyone you’ve ever met know you’ve got a new number? We don’t blame you. So, it’s a good thing that keeping your old phone number is both quick and easy – with PAC code.
Lots of us have had our phone number since, well, forever. So, the idea of switching to a new one seems like a whole lot of hassle, especially when you’re moving to another network.
But, good news, you won’t have to wave goodbye to those digits you’ve had for donkey’s years. Thanks to the UK’s Auto-Switch system, keeping the same number is super quick and super simple – here’s how.
It’s free, works on all UK networks, and you’ll usually get a reply in seconds. PAC codes are valid for 30 days, so you’ll need to hand it to your new provider before it expires.
You'll be able to share your code when you sign up for your new SIM or contract.
Most networks let you enter it when you checkout, but if you’re already set up, customer service should be able to sort it out. Once you’ve passed it along, they’ll do all the tech-y bits to have your number transferred over.
Now just wait for the actual move to be happen – and don’t worry, this part’s usually pretty painless.
As a rule, if you send your PAC before 5pm, your number will transfer over the next working day (after 5pm it'll be 2 working days).
During the switch, your old SIM will eventually tap out and stop working. That’s your cue to swap in the new SIM, pop on the kettle, and you should have your trusty number back in no time at all.
You can’t move your number to the same network – that’s an upgrade, not a switch. And don’t worry, when you upgrade, you keep your number automatically.
If you’re still in contract, you may have to pay an early termination fee. Even if you switch, you’re still responsible for any outstanding bills. Your old network will sort that out for you.
You don’t have to cancel your old provider yourself. The PAC transfer does this automatically, so you’re saved from an awkward phone call. Plus, cancelling early could cause you to lose the number permanently.
Save contacts, photos, and messages before the switch, just in case. Some services (WhatsApp, banking apps) may need re‑verification.
And hey presto - new network, same trusty number. Quick, easy, and no need to start sending out mass texts explaining who you are.
It’s a really simple process. You just need to ask your existing network provider for a PAC code by texting 67075. You’ll receive the PAC via text message and you’ll need to give it us when you order your SIM. If you already have your AO Mobile SIM and didn’t request a PAC code, you can get in touch so we can help you transfer over.
In most cases, it takes less than 1 working day. But, if it happens over a weekend or a bank holiday, it could take a little longer.
Yes there is. If you cancelled your contract with your previous provider without requesting a PAC then you have 1 month to request it. If you have already requested a PAC, it's valid for 30 days. If it expires, you can request a new one, but you'll need to provide it within 30 days to keep your number.
PACs last 30 days. If yours has expired, simply request a new PAC in the same way by texting PAC to 65075. Remember: you only have 30 days after cancelling your contract with your previous provider to transfer your number over.
You need a STAC code when you want to switch mobile networks and get a new phone number while also closing your old account and number down in the process. STAC codes can be requested from your current provider by texting STAC to 75075 (this number can vary by network so check with your current provider). You then give the code to your new provider to start your new service and cancel your old one.
Your provider must send your STAC and any other info on potential charges within 60 seconds by text message or 2 working days if you requested online or over the phone. The code is valid for 30 days.
A STAC code (Service Termination Authorisation Code): For closing your old mobile account and getting a new phone number.
A PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code): For Keeping your old number when switching to a new network.
Text INFO to 85075 to find out your contract status and any early-termination charges.
Just keep using your existing SIM as normal until it shows as No Service on your phone’s screen. Then insert or activate your new SIM card. A brief loss of service is normal during the switch and you may just need to restart your phone.
Delays are usually due to mismatched account info (name, account number, date of birth), a pending balance, or missing info as part of the request.
Here’s what to try:
Messages can sometimes lag behind calls after switching over.
Try:
No you don’t. Once you give us your PAC or STAC code, we’ll handle the switch and cancel your old service. Remember: You may still receive a final bill or any early termination charges if you’re leaving your contract early.
