The Best Air Purifiers for 2021

Whether it’s pet hair, pollen or just your everyday dust, there’s always something in the air of your home that could set off allergies or just make it a little harder to breathe completely freely. A good air purifier can lock away those nasties and just give your whole room a freshen up too. And with this guide we’ve made it a breeze to see which one is right for you.

    Best for allergies

Pets and summer – two of our favourite things, but also two of the most likely triggers for people with allergies. If you or someone in the family is a sufferer and wants rid of those puffy eyes and runny noses, grab yourself an air purifier with a HEPA filter. These trap dander, pollen and other allergens from the air so that everyone can breathe a little easier.

    Filter indicator

Filters last a long time but eventually they’re going to get clogged up, and you’ll need to change them to keep the purifier working as it should. Look for one with an indicator and it’ll tell you when it needs to be changed – so you don’t fork out too early, and you always have the best performance from your purifier. Ahh.

    Fan

If you’re using your air purifier to tackle those summer sniffles, why not kill two birds with one stone and get one that has a fan built in to keep the room cool too? Now, if anyone is worried about the pollen count, they can chill in more ways than one.

    Best for constant cleaners

A clean home is a happy home, but if you’re only cleaning the surfaces then it’s just a half job. It’s important you give the air a good clean too, especially as you might be kicking up more dust as you wipe down the skirting and vacuum the floor. A good air purifier makes sure that the air you’re breathing is as spotless as the rest of your home.

    Bacterial filter

A purifier with a bacterial filter can capture not just the larger dust particles but those really fine molecules too, including bacteria. You won’t just be scrubbing the nasties from the surfaces but banishing them from your home altogether.

    Filter indicator

Over time, the filter in your purifier will stop being as effective, because it’ll have caught so much dust and bacteria that the clean air isn’t getting forced through properly. The filter indicator will give you a heads up when it’s time to buy a new one, meaning you’ll always be able to keep the air lovely and fresh.

    Best for bedrooms

A good night’s sleep is so important, and cleaner air can make it easier for you to settle and get those forty winks you deserve. Just make sure you choose a quiet air purifier – it’s no good breathing better if you can’t block out the sound of a whirring fan.

    Timer

You don’t need to run an air purifier all night for it to help soothe you to sleep. Pick one with a timer, and you can have it automatically shut off once you’ve nodded off. No need to get up once you’re settled.

    Cool air

While summer can be great, it can make it difficult to get the right temperature when bedtime rolls around. Duvet on? Duvet off? Duvet half on with a leg stuck out? Choose an air purifier with a fan and you can make the whole room feel a lot more comfortable, and keep cool under the covers.

    Humidifier

You know those times when you wake up with a dry, scratchy throat and dry skin? That’s a sign that there’s not enough moisture in the air. Some purifiers double up as humidifiers, which produce water vapour if it’s needed, so you don’t wake up feeling grim.

    Remote control operated

If you’re the sort of person who likes a lie-in, you don’t need to leave the comfy spot in the morning to get the air feeling nice and fresh. Choose a purifier with a remote and you can turn it on and off from across the room. So, you can settle in for another 20 minutes. Or an hour. Cancel those plans.

    Best for bigger spaces

Filtering the air of every little impurity is no easy job, especially in rooms that are a bit more…roomy. If you’ve got a big space where you want clear, fresh air then you’ll want to make sure you get a purifier that’s up to the job and designed for larger rooms.

    Oscillating

Oscillating is just the fancy name for rotating from left-to-right and back again. A purifier that oscillates will cover a wider area of the room, so it isn’t just purifying the same air over-and-over again.

    360-degree filtration

Purifiers with 360-degree filtration force clean air throughout the whole room, which means they’re constantly drawing in the air that has impurities. They’re the best at making sure there’s no nasties hiding away in a corner, ready to spread once the air settles.
