    How to descale your kettle

Need to know how to descale your kettle? Here's how!

Learn how to easily descale your kettle. We share simple steps to remove limescale with natural ingredients or cleaning products, plus tips to keep your kettle running efficiently.

    How to descale your kettle

If you love a brew in the morning (or any time of day, really), you’ll want to keep your kettle in tip-top shape to get the best taste and make sure it keeps running as it should. Let’s face it, most of us probably don’t descale our most-used appliance as much as we should, so we’ve put together a how-to guide that’ll help you effectively maintain your kettle. You can use either natural ingredients or cleaning products, whatever suits you.

    1. Check for limescale buildups first. A white, chalky residue in the base and it taking longer or making more noise when boiling are all signs that your kettle needs some TLC.
    2. Don’t forget to double-check your kettle’s manual before cleaning – some manufacturers recommend certain products, and it can even affect your warranty if you don’t follow their guidance.

    Natural ingredients

To regularly keep on top of your kettle maintenance, natural ingredients are a great choice as they’re food-safe, eco-friendly, and a bit gentler than chemical cleaners. Choose white vinegar or lemon juice, whichever you’ve got to hand, and follow these steps:

    1. Fill the kettle halfway with equal parts water and white vinegar or lemon juice.
    2. Boil the solution and leave it to sit for 30 minutes.
    3. Pour everything out and rinse thoroughly – we recommend at least 3 times to get rid of every speck of limescale and vinegar.
    4. Boil fresh water again to remove any lingering solution, and you’re ready for your next cuppa.

    Cleaning products

If you’ve got heavy limescale buildup, chemical cleaning is that bit more powerful. So, if you’re not going to descale your kettle regularly, this would be a good method for you.

    1. Half-fill your kettle and bring to the boil.
    2. Pour in your cleaning solution and leave – how long you let it sit depends on which cleaner you’re using, so follow the instructions for that.
    3. Empty the kettle, refill it with fresh water, and empty again. We recommend doing this 3 times to get rid of any trace of limescale and cleaning solution.
    4. Fill with fresh water again and boil.
    5. Empty one last time, and you can reward your work with a piping hot brew.
