What To Look For When Searching For A New Vacuum Cleaner

Looking for a new vacuum? With so many options out there, it can be hard to know where to start. Don’t worry—we’ve broken down what to look for so you can find the right one for your home, hassle-free.

Katie Lilywhite, AO’s floorcare expert explains what to look for when searching for a new cordless vacuum cleaner.

What are the key features to look for in a cordless vacuum for hard floors?

    Run time

As cordless vacuums run off a battery, their run times vary depending on the model. Some last as little as 15 minutes for quick tidy-ups, while others run for up to 120 minutes, ideal for cleaning an entire home.

    Battery

All cordless vacuums have removable and rechargeable batteries, and some models include wall-mounted charging docks for convenience.

    Digital display

Some high-end models feature an LED screen that provides real-time performance updates. These displays allow users to switch between Eco, Medium, or Boost modes for different surfaces.

    Flexibility & collapsible storage

Cordless vacuums are already more compact than uprights or cylinders, and some models offer foldable or collapsible handles for easy storage in small cupboards.

    LED lights

Built-in LED headlights on the vacuum’s floorhead illuminate dust and dirt, ensuring you don’t miss any spots.

How does suction power compare between high-end and budget-friendly models?

Typically, higher-end vacuums provide stronger suction and more power settings due to advanced motor technology, making them better for deep cleaning carpets and hard floors. Budget-friendly options can also perform well but might struggle a bit more with fine dust or embedded debris, especially on carpets.

Are there specific brush roll designs that are better for hard floors?

Most modern vacuum cleaners have a hard floor setting, allowing them to adapt to surfaces like wood, laminate, tile or vinyl. Soft roller brush heads or fluffy rollers are ideal for hard floor as they pick up fine dust and larger debris without scratching surfaces. Some models include rubberised or anti-static brush rolls, which improve performance on smooth flooring.

Do certain models handle fine dust and larger debris better than others?

Different brands offer various ‘allergy care’ options, using special technology to trap dust and allergens. For instance, Samsung’s Multi-layer Filtration System captures 99.999% of dust for cleaner air while vacuuming. Some vacuums even have settings that adjust suction based on how dirty the floor is, providing a more efficient clean.

Are there any upcoming technologies or models worth waiting for?

New models feature reverse clean technology, enabling them to pick up dirt while moving both forward and backwards. In addition, newer models feature auto-emptying dustbins. These vacuums will have docking stations that automatically empty the dustbin, transferring debris into a container that can hold up to 30 days' worth of dirt. Many vacuums now offer an AI cleaning mode, which adjusts the settings to suit different floor types, ensuring powerful suction for optimal cleaning.

Do any models have self-cleaning brush rolls to prevent hair tangles?

Shark’s Anti-Hair Wrap technology was designed to prevent suction loss caused by tangled hair. The brush roll actively removes hair from the bristle guard and comb, keeping it tangle-free. This is particularly beneficial for pet owners or those with long hair.

How well do vacuums transition between different floor types (e.g., tile to wood)?

Are there common issues with cordless vacuums that buyers should be aware of?

    Battery life

Short runtime can be frustrating, particularly in larger homes. Look for models with longer battery life or interchangeable batteries for extended use.

    Overpaying for unnecessary features

While smart controls and additional settings can be useful, they may not add significant value. Prioritise essential features like suction power, ease of use, and battery life.

    Small dustbins

If convenience is important to you, opt for models with larger dustbins to reduce the frequency of emptying.

    Filtration concerns

For allergy sufferers, it's important to check for HEPA filters or similar features, especially if you have pets or respiratory issues.
