How to set up a gaming PC for the first time

Find out how to set up your brand new gaming PC for the first time with our quick 5 step guide

You’ve bagged yourself an epic gaming PC. Win! We know you can’t wait to get going, and we’re here to guide you through the crucial first steps. From plugging in to optimising those killer graphics, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to get your game on.

Get connected

Let’s start with the basics. Your keyboard and mouse will more than likely be a USB connection – simply find a matching port and away you go. As for the display, you’ll have either a VGA, DVI or HDMI cable to hook up to your machine.

World wide web

Now let’s make sure you’ve got access to the wonders of the internet. If your machine doesn’t have Wi-Fi built in, you’ll need an Ethernet cable to link up to your modem. Even if you have built-in Wi-Fi, an Ethernet cable can provide a more stable connection and less lag – perfect for gaming online or keeping up to date with your social media timelines.

Power up

The most important part – power. You’ll have one for the PC and one for the monitor. Plug in and switch on.

Stay safe

Now we’ve got power, it’s time to batten down the hatches and protect your gaming rig from viruses, spyware and any other baddies. Windows computers come with basic antivirus software as standard, Windows Defender. We’d recommend upgrading and giving your precious kit complete protection with one of the two security kings, McAfee or Norton.

Game on!

And you’re all done! All that’s left to do now is gather your games, download, install and get stuck into some top quality gaming on your mouth-watering set up.
