What are the best apps for my Smart TV?

Smart TVs make binge-watching the latest box sets or latest movies really simple. With unlimited entertainment at your fingertips, you’d be forgiven for going into hiding for weeks and taking it all in. But, it’s not all about what you can watch. With a plethora of apps available you can browse the web, keep up to date with your social media channels and even check the weather. We’ve done some searching and dug out some of the coolest apps out there.

TV catch-up and streaming

Probably the most popular use for Smart TVs. Whether you’ve missed the latest drama and want to catch-up or you want to stream something new, here’s our pick of online TV services:

  • Freeview Play – on top of 70 digital and 15 HD live channels, you also get access to the most popular catch-up and on demand services in the UK. All in one package. And, there’s no monthly fee for any of it, so there’s something for everyone, including the bill payer. Click here to find out more about Freeview Play.
  • Netflix – these guys set the TV and movie streaming ball rolling back in 2007 so it seems only fair to include them. You’ll need a subscription but with a gigantic selection of old and new content available for you to stream, you won’t regret getting involved.

Stay social

Check your social media timelines during the ad breaks without having to nip in your pocket for your phone. Super lazy stalking.

  • Twitter – whoever’s tweets you follow, you can now follow them on your TV too.
  • Skype – tired of squinting to see the long-distance relatives on the laptop screen? Give them a call on the television instead!

We're jammin'

It’s not all about what you watch. If you’ve got a booming sound system linked up to your Smart TV, make the most of it with online music services like Spotify, Deezer and a whole host of digital radio stations.

The best of the rest

  • Google Chrome – this popular browser is perfect for your everyday internet needs
  • YouTube – the latest viral funnies (or the sneezing panda for the 300th time) from the comfort of your sofa.
  • Accuweather – with up to date weather information and forecasts, you’ll know if you’ll need to take the big coat to work in the morning or not.

Although we’ve done our best to pick some of the most common apps, Smart TV platforms are constantly changing so some may not be available on your set. Don’t worry though, there’ll still be tons to choose from – just have a browse round the app store!
